Create a performance threshold alert

The Unisphere Performance Management application allows the user to gather, view, and analyze performance data to troubleshoot and optimize the storage systems.

About this task

You can use the default system values for thresholds and alerts, or create your own. When you set threshold values, you can optionally view them when you create charts for performance metrics in the Diagnostic view.

The following rules apply:

  • The Lower Threshold Range must not intersect the Upper Threshold Range.
  • The 1st Upper Threshold must be lower than the 2nd Upper Threshold.
  • The 2nd Upper Threshold must be greater than the 1st Upper Threshold.
  • The 1st Lower Threshold must be greater than the 2nd Lower Threshold.
  • The 2nd Lower Threshold must be lower than the 1st Lower Threshold.

To create performance threshold alerts:

Steps

  1. Select Settings icon.
  2. Select Alerts > Performance Thresholds and Alerts.
  3. Select a storage system.
  4. Select the category for which you want to create a threshold or alert.
  5. Click Create.
  6. In the Set Thresholds section, select the System, Category, and Metrics.
You can select KPI or All to display the appropriate metrics in the list.
  7. Configure a value for Upper Threshold or Upper Threshold and Lower Threshold.
Each threshold can have a 1st Threshold value or a 1st Threshold value and a 2nd Threshold value.
  8. In the optional Trigger Alert section, select Issue Alert if Threshold is exceeded and configure thresholds.
  9. To have a real-time trace started automatically when a critical threshold is reached, select Add Real Time Trace to Critical Threshold.
In the Real Time Traces list, real time traces created in this way have "Alert:" in the description. By default, those traces are retained for three days.
  10. For each threshold you configure, specify values for the following fields:
Severity The following values are available:
    • Information
    • Warning
    • Critical
Occurrence The number of occurrences in the data samples which must happen before the alert is triggered. For example, if the threshold is breached three times out of five samples, an alert is initiated.
Samples The number of data collection samples over which the occurrences can occur before the alert is triggered. For example, if the threshold is breached three times out of five samples, an alert is initiated. The samples are based on the STP (DCF file) collection interval for performance stats. This interval is typically five minutes by default, but you can choose to collect in 10 minutes or 15 minute intervals. The samples are based on the performance collection interval, so typically one sample equals one 5 minute interval. As Unisphere processes the statistics to save to the performance database, it checks to see if any performance thresholds have been breached. For example, if after processing three 5 minute intervals and the threshold for a particular statistic was breached in each of those intervals, then an alert would be triggered.
  11. Click OK.
